My name is Ken Walker and I was born in Glasgow,
the industrial capital of Scotland, in 1952.
I was educated in Scotland and worked there
until 1980 when I moved to Hong Kong to take
up a job as a primary teacher. I met
my wife, Noi, in Thailand in 1991 and we were married in
1993. I have two stepsons, Phakphum
and Pinyo. Eight years later I am now a step-grandfather
to Wee Pet which means 'Little Diamond'
in Scots/Thai, and Wee JJ, whose proper name
is Jade. We all live in Hong Kong.
Our home is on Hong Kong island where we have a view overlooking the harbour. It would be
a spectacular view
if we were a few floors higher. Noi has a large collection of orchids which
fill the houseand gives the place a rain
forest atmosphere.
For the past forty years I have been interested
in natural history, especially aquaculture and
herpetology. I was president of the
Scottish Aquarium Society when I finished college and am
now very proud to be the Asian representative
for TortoiseAid International.
As well as turtles, I also have a breeding
colony of Green Iguanas (Iguana iguana) and a trio
of Spiny Tail Iguanas (Ctenosaurus similis).
We also have a Hill Mynah (Gracilis religiosa)
which is responsible for the language development
of my step grandsons. They tend to squeal
and whistle a lot.
My reptile collection is mainly to be found on our balcony. Several have been with me for many years. Most of the turtles are wet market rescues and are from China and other parts of SouthEast Asia. Some of them have come from the United States, but may have actually been born in Asia.
Although I have other hobbies, I am most interested in the setting up of breeding programmes for Asian turtles in general and Chinese species in particular. This is a major concern with TortoiseAid International and all other chelonian protection organizations.
I am always happy to hear from people with
an interest in reptiles from this part of the world
so do feel
free to get in touch.
(Please note! Ken is moving at present, and will be back on line ASAP!)
